The Public Process at Work

April 3rd, 2004

Shortly after posting about my problems with the Commons Collections and filing a bug, it was fixed. Less than 24 hours had elapsed since my initial submission, which is a pretty good turn-around time. Another positive experience with open source software.

The problem is that it wasn’t the resolution that I wanted. Instead of fixing the code to match the documentation, the volunteer developer fixed the documentation to match the code. Of course it’s not the developer’s fault - he just wanted to get the bug fixed and I didn’t specify a desired resolution.

What I learned from this process: Always submit a patch when you open a bug. I didn’t think of it when I opened the bug, and I’d always submitted patches with open bugs in the past. In the future, I’ll be more respective of the developers that I demand time and effort from.

I am a blotter.

April 1st, 2004

There are always a few sheets of unlined, white, legal-sized paper next to me, wherever I happen to be working. Over the course of a work week, which for me has lately meant Sunday-Saturday, I will manage to fill most of the sheets with notes.

Sometimes the note is something I need to know for five minutes: the phone number of my insurance agent. She left it on the voice mail. Other notes are more permanent. Notes for something on a client project that I’m not going to get to for a few days, for instance.

If the note is something that I think will be significant later one, I’ll add it to my personal wiki. (I know you have personal wiki. I can’t be the only one…)

When the pages of notes are full and no longer needed, I shred them in my 1/32″ cross-cut shredder. Okay, I’m a paranoid blotter.
